Ask for a diagram of your proposal
When an estimate offers peel-and-stick or synthetic underlayment, ask the contractor to show the planned layers for your roof. Have it identify the exact products, where each will be used, and what surface each will be installed over. That picture is more useful than a broad premium-versus-standard label because it connects the choice to the installation being priced for your house.
Compare requirements, not slogans
Request the current manufacturer instructions for the proposed products and ask the estimator to explain the relevant conditions. If different materials are planned for different areas, ask why and what documents support that arrangement. A mixed proposal should be understandable in the same way as any other proposed assembly.
- What roof covering and deck conditions were considered?
- How is the specified surface preparation included?
- What requirements apply at seams and roof details?
- How will exposure during the work be managed?
- What changes between the base proposal and the optional upgrade?
Keep performance and insurance questions documented
Ask for supporting product information before relying on a claim about water resistance or installation performance. Take insurance questions to your insurer with the actual proposed details; do not assume the category name establishes a credit. Ask who will document the concealed layers and provide the records. Your decision should rest on the complete specified assembly, the project scope, and the documents behind it, with any remaining questions resolved before the choice is finalized.
Understand the layer beneath the roof covering.
Underlayment sits beneath the visible roof covering as part of the specified assembly. Felt, synthetic and self-adhered products are different categories, not interchangeable promises. Compare the exact product, installation requirements and compatibility with the rest of the proposed roof.
Understand how the layers connect
The underlayment, roof covering, flashing and edges must be considered together. Ask how the selected system handles valleys and penetrations. If an upgrade is offered, request a clear explanation of the assembly change and the added work.
